Cocorex® Cough Syrup Precautions

Codeine and Chlorphaniramine may cause drowsiness. Caution should be exercised when driving and operating machinery or appliances. Dependence on codeine occur but it isuncommon with antitussive use, because of the short duration of therapy and the small doses required. The following should not be administered concomitantly with Cocorex, antihypertensives with central nervous system depressant effects, sedatives tranquilizers, alcohol, MAO inhibitors and other CNS depressants. Cocorex should be used with caution in patients with a history of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, increased intra-ocular pressure, bronchial asthma and hepatic impairment.

While treating cough as a symptom, it is important to make every effort to determine and treat appropriately the underlying cause such as a specific infection. Sedatives, tranquilizers, alcohol, and other CNS depressants should not be administered concomitantly with Cocorex Cough Syrup. Patients whose work or occupation involves driving vehicles or handling machinery should be cautioned not to drive a vehicle or handle a machine if they feel drowsy while taking Cocorex Cough Syrup. Codeine should not be given to patients with or at risk of developing respiratory failure, to those receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and to those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.it contains 37.2% of alcohol v/v.

These may occur in occasional patients depending on his or her sensitivity to individual ingredients, and include drowsiness, dizziness, dryness of mouth, nausea, and constipation.

There have been no reports of over dosage with Cocorex Cough Syrup. Necessary measures should be taken to maintain and support circulation and respiration, possibly using respiratory stimulants. Gastric lavage should be performed if indicated and convulsion controlled with diazepam. Catheterisation of the bladder may be necessary. Hypertension  may be controlled with alpha adrenoceptor blocking drugs.

Adverse effects occur rarely with the suggested dosage. Chlorpheniramine Maleate may cause drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, weakness, nausea and headache. Codeine is generally well tolerated. Vomiting, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, pruritus, sweating and agitation have been reported. Ephedrine may cause tremor, anxiety, insomnia, tachycardia, transient hypertension and palpitations.

Use in pregnancy and lactation: No data are available on the use of Cocorex Cough Syrup during human pregnancy and lactation.

Codeine, a derivative of morphine and a powerful narcotic painkiller is usually added to all cough formulations. This suppresses pain centers in the brain and provides the relief. However it is potentially very addictive and so it is not a very good thing to give to the children. Therefore it is best to avoid cough syrups containing codeine.

Cocorex is not generally a fatal drug substitute unless taken in extremely high quantities.

Side effects of Cocorex are the following:
.It can cause short term memory loss, Sleeplessness, Tremors, Spasms, Muscular pains, Dehydration –common side effects
Serious kidney damage or constipation are the results for long term abuse of the drug. It may be unsuitable for acute diabetic patients and this said medicine has high sugar content.

Why do I need this medicine?
Cocorex helps to relieve symptoms of cold and allergy, such as runny nose, itch, watery eyes and sneezing. It also helps relieve allergic skin conditions such as hives, itchy rash due to insect bites or chicken pox.

Cocorex belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines.


How do I take this medicine?

Take Cocorex exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Cocorex with or without food. Take it with a full glass of water.

You may stop taking Cocorex once you feel better, unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise.


What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you are taking antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or have taken them for the last 14 days. Some examples of MAOIs include moclobemide, phenelzine and tranylcypromine.

Alert your doctor if you have glaucoma, asthma, stomach or intestinal ulcers, prostate problems or difficulty in urination.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are on Cocorex.

Do not give Cocorex to premature and newborn babies or children below 2 years old.

Do not give Cocorex to any child unless advised by the child's doctor or a pharmacist.

 

What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions: epilepsy, overactive thyroid gland, high blood pressure, heart, liver or lung disease.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Cocorex to a child or elderly person. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Cocorex syrup also contains alcohol. Use with caution in young children and heavy alcohol drinkers.


What side effects could I experience?
Cocorex may cause drowsiness and dizziness. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Cocorex may also cause dry mouth, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, difficulty passing urine, headache, tiredness, nervousness, thickening of phlegm. These side effects are usually mild and uncommon. Alert your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or refuse to go away.

Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Cocorex. Also inform your doctor if your condition does not improve while taking Cocorex.

Can I take this with other medicines?
Alert your doctor if you are taking antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or have taken them for the last 14 days. Some examples of MAOIs include moclobemide, phenelzine and tranylcypromine.

Alert your doctor if you are taking anxiety medicines, sleeping pills or an epilepsy medicine called phenytoin.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.


Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?
Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Cocorex syrup should be kept away from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
